With MicroSub+™ systems, the power is built right into the subwoofer
system. Housing a proprietary Class D amplifier, this incredible
subwoofer system utilizes our exclusive DCD™ amplifier technology to
extract maximum output from its specially engineered, ultra
low-impedance W3v3 driver. By combining direct power conversion with
an ultra-high current output section, DCD™ amplifiers are free of
conventional switching power supplies, enabling them to generate
remarkable power with unprecedented efficiency.
Key to the enclosure’s performance is its efficient slot-ported design
and precise tuning of its 8Wv3 subwoofer driver. Extensive interior
bracing permits the use of thinner wall material that maximizes the
enclosure's internal volume relative to its exterior volume. The port
wraps around two walls of the enclosure to produce the necessary low
tuning frequency that ensures excellent extension and response
smoothness. The flared port entry and exit further enhance sound
quality by minimizing air-flow noises through the port.
Integration to OEM and aftermarket head units is a snap thanks to a
variety of input options and automatic turn-on capability (via signal
sensing or DC offset sensing). Also included is a variable frequency
low-pass filter (50-200 Hz), along with output polarity control
switch. Adding an optional RBC-1 remote level control (sold
separately) lets you control subwoofer levels directly from the
driver’s seat. A quick-disconnect power connector makes it easy to
remove the subwoofer when you need the extra space. As with all
MicroSub™ systems, these amplified versions produce the kind of output
and extension normally associated with much larger systems.
Note: DCD™ amplified systems use very specific components. Never use a
DCD™ amplifier or its companion subwoofer(s) with incompatible,
non-DCD™ products. Doing so will void the warranty and may cause

The most efficient subwoofer amplifier technology on the marketdeliversimpressive power with minimal current draw and heat.
Theconventional way to get high power in a car amplifier is to useaswitching power supply. This increases the battery voltage fromitsnominal 12V to something higher–the more powerfultheamplifier, thegreater the required voltage. This power conversion isnever perfectlyefficient–about 10% of what goes into theamplifier is wastedand endsup dissipating into heat.
JLAudio'sDirect Conversion Class-D Technology (DCD™)innovatesbyeliminating the need for this power conversion stepentirely. Becausewe are still bound by the laws of physics, the lack ofa step-up powersupply means we have to extract as much power aspossible from thevehicle's 12V supply. If we were to connect aDCD™ amplifierto aconventional 4-ohm subwoofer with thislimitation in place, we wouldonly achieve about 25 watts, and we allknow that powering a subwooferrequires a lot more power than this.
Toovercomethis obstacle, the DCD™ amplifiers have beendesigned todriveextremely low impedance speaker loads–as low as 1/4-ohm(0.25ohm)!With these very low impedance loads, we can deliver up to 500watts ofclean power, subwoofer power. Those who know Ohm's law and thatnothingis free realize that this will require a lot of current to flow,andthat's exactly what DCD™ is engineered to deliver...over50Amps peakinto a speaker!
Todealwith these high current amounts, the special, very low-impedanceJLAudio subwoofer drivers used with DCD™ amplifiersareengineeredwith unique voice coils and tinsel leads. Connectionsbetween theamplifier and speaker are made using special heavy gaugespeaker cable,with special attention paid to connection integrity todeal with thehigh current output.
Thebenefitof all this effort is that DCD™ amplifiers completelyavoidthelosses associated with a switching power supply, allowing theentireamplifier to achieve total power efficiencies in the 91-94%range. Thisis very close to the theoretical limit for Class-Defficiency andresults in very little heat being generated. All of thisallows for avery compact, powerful amplifier that can fit in some ofour mostspace-efficient enclosed systems.
Thisadvanced cabinet-building technique uses CNC-machining tocreateprecise panel joints that make enclosure assembly more efficientandexact.
Webegin with quality medium-density fiberboard, which is then machinedonour CNC-controlled KOMO woodworking stations. These powerfulmachinesare able to cut a wide range of features onto a sheet of MDF,withminimal waste and absolute precision. The KOMO machines cut outthewoofer holes, terminal holes, cut dado grooves, create countersinksandmost importantly, cut the angles at the edges of the panels thatformthe enclosure's main shell so that these panels fit togetherprecisely,with no gaps or leaks.
Oncethepanels are cut, assembly technicians line them up in the correctorderand glue their outer faces onto a long piece of carpet, creatinga"wrap": a long series of panels, hinged temporarily by the carpet.Inthe next assembly step, our wood assembly teams fill theV-groovesbetween the panels and any dado grooves that receive dividersorsecondary wraps with wood-glue. Once the glue is applied, theenclosureshells folds together along the V-grooves, capturing dividersin thedado grooves and secondary wraps, and evenly spreading thegluethroughout the joints. One line of mechanical fasteners is appliedtohold the structure together while the wood glue dries.
TheV-groovetechnique greatly improves assembly efficiency, and alsoresults in afar stronger and better sealed enclosure than the typicalbutt-jointconstruction found on imported enclosures. The quality ofthe MDF usedin JL Audio systems is also vastly better than the typical"China-GradeMDF" used in the imported products.
Theflared slot-port design reduces turbulence at the port mouth so astominimize any audible airflow effects common to ported enclosures.
Whileported enclosures deliver important efficiency advantages overtheirsealed counterparts, they also present unique design challenges.In caraudio, the desire for lower tuning frequencies from smallenclosurevolumes leads to long port lengths that often requirecompromising theport area. These compromises lead to higher airflowspeeds through theport, which can create noise as the air is drivenacross the the edgeof the port. The flared port design minimizes theseairflow effects byproviding a smooth transition for the high-speed airflow, rather thanan abrupt termination. The result is less noise andcleaner-soundingbass.
DynamicMotorAnalysis - DMA Optimized Motor
JLAudio's proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is a powerfulsuiteof FEA-based modeling systems, first developed by JL Audio in 1997andrefined over the years to scientifically address the issue ofspeakermotor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortion andfaithfullyreproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean,articulate bass.
Since1997, JL Audio has been at the forefront of FiniteElementAnalysis-based modeling of loudspeaker motors and suspensions.Thisresearch is aimed at decoding what we refer to as the"LoudspeakerGenome"... a project aimed at understanding the truebehavior ofloudspeakers under power and in motion. A major component ofthisintegrated system is DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis). Starting withthe15W3 and the W7 Subwoofers in the late 1990's and early 2000's, DMAhasplayed an important role in the design of all JL Audio wooferssoldtoday, including our component woofers.
DMAisa Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based system, meaning that it takesalarge, complex problem, breaks it down into small solution elementsforanalysis and then assembles the data to form an accurate,"big-picture"solution. DMA's breakthrough is that it actuallyconsiders the effectsof power through the coil as well as coil/coneposition within theframework of a time-domain analysis. This gives usa highly accuratemodel of a speaker's actual behavior under realpower, something thatthe traditional Thiele-Small models or other lowpower measurementscannot do. Because DMA does not rely on asteady-state model, it is ableto consider shifts in the circuitelements being analyzed. Thesemodeling routines are intense, requiringhours to run for a wholespeaker.
DMAisable to analyze the real effects of fluctuating power and excursionuponthe magnetic circuit of the motor, specifically the dynamicvariationsof the "fixed" magnetic field. This delivers intenselyvaluableinformation compared to traditional modeling, which assumesthat the"fixed" field produced in the air gap by the magnet and themotor platesis unchanging. DMA not only shows that this "fixed" fieldchanges inreaction to the magnetic field created by current flowingthrough thevoice coil, but it helps our engineers arrive at motorsolutions thatminimize this instability. Analyzing this behavior iscritical tounderstanding the distortion mechanisms of a speaker motorand shedslight on the aspects of motor design that determine trulylinearbehavior:
- Linearmotorforce over the speaker's operational excursion range
- Consistentmotorforce with both positive and negative current through the coil
- Consistentmotorforce at varying applied power levels
Ourabilityto fully analyze these aspects of motor behavior allows ourtransducerengineers to make critical adjustments to motor designs thatresult inextremely linear, highly stable dynamic loudspeaker motorsystems.

ElevatedFrameCooling (U.S. Patent #6,219,431 & #6,229,902)
JLAudio's patented Elevated Frame Cooling design delivers coolairthrough slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil ofthespeaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also soundqualityby minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
Manyspeakers employ venting techniques to enhance voice coil cooling.Thisis typically accomplished by having big holes in the sides of theframejust below the spider attachment shelf. While it provides amodestcooling benefit, this low-velocity air-flow does not blowdirectly orstrongly on the voice coil.
Ourpatenteddesign improves upon this cooling technique in a number ofways. Byelevating the frame above the top-plate of the motor (viastand-offsintegrated into the bottom of the frame) a narrow,high-velocityair-path is created between the bottom surface of theframe and the topsurface of the top-plate. This air path leadsdirectly to the voice coiland then turns upward into the spider aircavity. By utilizing thepumping action of the spider through thisfocused air path, a largevolume of cool air hits the coil windingsdirectly.
Anotherimportantbenefit is that the upper surface of the top-plate (one ofthe speaker'shottest parts) is directly exposed to cooling air flow,whereas on aconventional design it is isolated from the air flow bythe lower flangeof the frame. The elevated frame technology greatlyincreases thermalpower handling, reduces compression effects and doesso without anyadditional parts.
FloatingConeAttach Method - FCAM™ (U.S. Patent #6,501,844)
Thisassembly technique, conceived by JL Audio, ensures propersurroundgeometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion controlanddynamic voice coil alignment.
JLAudio's patented FCAM™ technology is an innovative methodofbondingthe surround/cone assembly to the voice coil former/spiderassembly.This feature helps ensure concentricity of the surround,spider andvoice coil without torquing the suspension to achieve it.This allowsfor the inevitable, slight variations in production partdimensionswithout having them negatively impact the integrity of thesuspensionand coil-centering at high excursions.
VentedReinforcementCollar (U.S. Patent #5,734,734)
JLAudio's patented Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC®)improvestherigidity and stability of the cone/spider/voice coiljunction anddirects airflow over the voice coil windings for improvedthermalperformance.
The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC®) is a compositestructurethat addresses two issues related to reliability.
Byreinforcingthe critical junction between the cone, voice coil andspider, the VRCgreatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown ormaterial weakness. Itdoes this by greatly increasing adhesive contactarea and providingstress relief to the spider material at excursionextremes.
TheVRC™also features slots that facilitate air flow directlyonto thevoice coilwindings. This reduces thermal compression effects andenhancesreliability.
Currentversionsof the VRC™ also incorporate lead-wire strainreliefstructures to improve mechanical reliability.
InsertMoldedSuspension / Coil / Terminal Sub-Assembly (U.S. Patent#7,379,558)
Spiders,voice coils, terminals and lead wires are preassembled, usingapatent-pending process, onto a composite carrier for improvedprecisionand reliability.
Aconventional speaker is assembled in layers. In other words,multipleparts are assembled and glued sequentially into the basket,leading tostacking of tolerances and making it difficult to achieveoptimalassembly precision.
JLAudio'spatent-pending insert-molded spider carrier permanently bondsthe spiderto a mechanically robust carrier that also incorporates theterminalassembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhancedreliabilityand optimal alignment of parts. This subassembly isassembled outsidethe speaker basket, for optimum alignment andglue-joint integrity. Thebenefit is a more precisely built, moremechanically sound loudspeaker.
CustomizableTrimRing (U.S. Patent #D480,709)
Thisremovable ring can be painted to match the installation themeanddirectly receives JL Audio grille mesh inserts (sold separately).
ThisABS trim ring is molded in black, but that doesn't mean it has tostaythat way. By custom painting it, you can match your installationthemeand create a personalized look.
Specifically-designed grille mesh inserts are available separatelyandfit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

EngineeredLead-WireSystem (U.S. Patent #7,356,157)
Carefullyengineered lead-wire design and attachments ensure controlled,quietlead-wire behavior under the most extreme excursion demands.
Managingthe lead-wires on a long-excursion woofer is one of thetrickieraspects of its mechanical design. To address this, manylong-excursionwoofers today rely on a simple solution that weaves thelead-wires intothe spider (rear suspension) of the driver.
Thebiggestproblem with this approach is that spider limiting behaviorplays ahugely important role a woofer's performance. Lead-wires thatareattached or woven into the spider material can alter thespider's"stretching" behavior. The tinsel wire naturally has less'give' thanthe fabric material of the spider leading to asymmetricalspiderbehavior and non-uniform stress distribution around thespidercircumference. The wire attachment points can also causelocalizedpulling and tearing forces at the spider's excursion limits.As such,longevity becomes a major concern and makes the woven-in designlessthan ideal for very long-excursion designs.
Whileatraditional 'flying lead' design does not compromise spider linearityorradial stability, it creates its own challenges on along-excursionwoofer. Managing the 'whipping' behavior of the wire andmaking sure itdoes not contact the cone or spider is one challenge.Another isensuring that the leads do not short one another or the frameof thewoofer.
Toovercomethese issues, JL Audio's engineered flying lead-wires workinconjunction with carefully engineered entry and exit supportstructuresmolded into the terminals and the voice coil collar. Somemodels alsofeature jacketed lead-wires to further reduce the likelihoodofshorting and fatigue. The result is flawless high-excursionlead-wirebehavior, with outstanding reliability and none of thecompromisesinherent to a woven-in lead wire system. Building woofersthis wayrequires much more labor and parts complexity than the simplerwoven-inapproach, but the payoff is in reduced distortion, reducedmechanicalnoise and improved reliability.
