Amplified Subwoofer System with Single 8W3v3-0.40 Subwoofer Driver, Built-In 250W Class D Amplifier, Black Carpet - Ported Enclosure

With MicroSub+™ systems, the power is built right into the subwoofer system. Housing a proprietary Class D amplifier, this incredible subwoofer system utilizes our exclusive DCD™ amplifier technology to extract maximum output from its specially engineered, ultra low-impedance W3v3 driver. By combining direct power conversion with an ultra-high current output section, DCD™ amplifiers are free of conventional switching power supplies, enabling them to generate remarkable power with unprecedented efficiency.

Key to the enclosure’s performance is its efficient slot-ported design and precise tuning of its 8Wv3 subwoofer driver. Extensive interior bracing permits the use of thinner wall material that maximizes the enclosure's internal volume relative to its exterior volume. The port wraps around two walls of the enclosure to produce the necessary low tuning frequency that ensures excellent extension and response smoothness. The flared port entry and exit further enhance sound quality by minimizing air-flow noises through the port.

Integration to OEM and aftermarket head units is a snap thanks to a variety of input options and automatic turn-on capability (via signal sensing or DC offset sensing). Also included is a variable frequency low-pass filter (50-200 Hz), along with output polarity control switch. Adding an optional RBC-1 remote level control (sold separately) lets you control subwoofer levels directly from the driver’s seat. A quick-disconnect power connector makes it easy to remove the subwoofer when you need the extra space. As with all MicroSub™ systems, these amplified versions produce the kind of output and extension normally associated with much larger systems.

Note: DCD™ amplified systems use very specific components. Never use a DCD™ amplifier or its companion subwoofer(s) with incompatible, non-DCD™ products. Doing so will void the warranty and may cause severe damage.

DCD™ Amplifier Technology


The most efficient subwoofer amplifier technology on themarketdeliversimpressive power with minimal current draw and heat.

Theconventional way to get high power in a car amplifier is touseaswitching power supply. This increases the battery voltagefromitsnominal 12V to something higher–the morepowerfultheamplifier, thegreater the required voltage. This powerconversion isnever perfectlyefficient–about 10% of what goesinto theamplifier is wastedand endsup dissipating into heat.

JLAudio'sDirectConversion Class-D Technology (DCD™)innovatesbyeliminatingthe need for this power conversion stepentirely. Becausewe are stillbound by the laws of physics, the lack ofa step-up powersupply means wehave to extract as much power aspossible from thevehicle's 12V supply.If we were to connect aDCD™ amplifierto aconventional 4-ohmsubwoofer with thislimitation in place, we wouldonly achieve about 25watts, and we allknow that powering a subwooferrequires a lot morepower than this.

Toovercomethisobstacle, the DCD™ amplifiers have beendesignedtodriveextremely low impedance speaker loads–as low as1/4-ohm(0.25ohm)!With these very low impedance loads, we can deliver upto 500watts ofclean power, subwoofer power. Those who know Ohm's lawand thatnothingis free realize that this will require a lot of currentto flow,andthat's exactly what DCD™ is engineered todeliver...over50Amps peakinto a speaker!

Todealwiththese high current amounts, the special, very low-impedanceJLAudiosubwoofer drivers used with DCD™ amplifiersareengineeredwithunique voice coils and tinsel leads. Connectionsbetween theamplifierand speaker are made using special heavy gaugespeaker cable,withspecial attention paid to connection integrity todeal with thehighcurrent output.

Thebenefitofall this effort is that DCD™ amplifierscompletelyavoidthelosses associated with a switching power supply,allowing theentireamplifier to achieve total power efficiencies in the91-94%range. Thisis very close to the theoretical limit forClass-Defficiency andresults in very little heat being generated. Allof thisallows for avery compact, powerful amplifier that can fit insome ofour mostspace-efficient enclosed systems.

V-Groove MDF Construction


Thisadvanced cabinet-building technique uses CNC-machiningtocreateprecise panel joints that make enclosure assembly moreefficientandexact.

Webegin with quality medium-density fiberboard, which is thenmachinedonour CNC-controlled KOMO woodworking stations. Thesepowerfulmachinesare able to cut a wide range of features onto a sheetof MDF,withminimal waste and absolute precision. The KOMO machines cutoutthewoofer holes, terminal holes, cut dado grooves, createcountersinksandmost importantly, cut the angles at the edges of thepanels thatformthe enclosure's main shell so that these panels fittogetherprecisely,with no gaps or leaks.

Oncethepanelsare cut, assembly technicians line them up in the correctorderand gluetheir outer faces onto a long piece of carpet, creatinga"wrap": a longseries of panels, hinged temporarily by the carpet.Inthe next assemblystep, our wood assembly teams fill theV-groovesbetween the panels andany dado grooves that receive dividersorsecondary wraps with wood-glue.Once the glue is applied, theenclosureshells folds together along theV-grooves, capturing dividersin thedado grooves and secondary wraps,and evenly spreading thegluethroughout the joints. One line ofmechanical fasteners is appliedtohold the structure together while thewood glue dries.

TheV-groovetechniquegreatly improves assembly efficiency, and alsoresults in afar strongerand better sealed enclosure than the typicalbutt-jointconstructionfound on imported enclosures. The quality ofthe MDF usedin JL Audiosystems is also vastly better than the typical"China-GradeMDF" used inthe imported products.

Flared Slot-Port


Theflared slot-port design reduces turbulence at the port mouth soastominimize any audible airflow effects common to ported enclosures.

Whileported enclosures deliver important efficiency advantagesovertheirsealed counterparts, they also present unique designchallenges.In caraudio, the desire for lower tuning frequencies fromsmallenclosurevolumes leads to long port lengths that oftenrequirecompromising theport area. These compromises lead to higherairflowspeeds through theport, which can create noise as the air isdrivenacross the the edgeof the port. The flared port design minimizestheseairflow effects byproviding a smooth transition for the high-speedairflow, rather thanan abrupt termination. The result is less noiseandcleaner-soundingbass.


DMA Optimized

DynamicMotorAnalysis- DMA Optimized Motor

JLAudio's proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is apowerfulsuiteof FEA-based modeling systems, first developed by JL Audioin 1997andrefined over the years to scientifically address the issueofspeakermotor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortionandfaithfullyreproduced transients... or put simply: tight,clean,articulate bass.

Since1997, JL Audio has been at the forefront ofFiniteElementAnalysis-based modeling of loudspeaker motors andsuspensions.Thisresearch is aimed at decoding what we refer to asthe"LoudspeakerGenome"... a project aimed at understanding thetruebehavior ofloudspeakers under power and in motion. A majorcomponent ofthisintegrated system is DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis).Starting withthe15W3 and the W7 Subwoofers in the late 1990's and early2000's, DMAhasplayed an important role in the design of all JL Audiowooferssoldtoday, including our component woofers.

DMAisaFinite Element Analysis (FEA)-based system, meaning that ittakesalarge, complex problem, breaks it down into small solutionelementsforanalysis and then assembles the data to form anaccurate,"big-picture"solution. DMA's breakthrough is that itactuallyconsiders the effectsof power through the coil as well ascoil/coneposition within theframework of a time-domain analysis. Thisgives usa highly accuratemodel of a speaker's actual behavior underrealpower, something thatthe traditional Thiele-Small models or otherlowpower measurementscannot do. Because DMA does not rely onasteady-state model, it is ableto consider shifts in thecircuitelements being analyzed. Thesemodeling routines are intense,requiringhours to run for a wholespeaker.

DMAisableto analyze the real effects of fluctuating power and excursionuponthemagnetic circuit of the motor, specifically the dynamicvariationsof the"fixed" magnetic field. This delivers intenselyvaluableinformationcompared to traditional modeling, which assumesthat the"fixed" fieldproduced in the air gap by the magnet and themotor platesis unchanging.DMA not only shows that this "fixed" fieldchanges inreaction to themagnetic field created by current flowingthrough thevoice coil, but ithelps our engineers arrive at motorsolutions thatminimize thisinstability. Analyzing this behavior iscritical tounderstanding thedistortion mechanisms of a speaker motorand shedslight on the aspectsof motor design that determine trulylinearbehavior:

  1. Linearmotorforceover the speaker's operational excursion range
  2. Consistentmotorforcewith both positive and negative current through the coil
  3. Consistentmotorforceat varying applied power levels

Ourabilitytofully analyze these aspects of motor behavior allowsourtransducerengineers to make critical adjustments to motor designsthatresult inextremely linear, highly stable dynamic loudspeakermotorsystems.

Elevated Frame Cooling

ElevatedFrameCooling(U.S. Patent #6,219,431 & #6,229,902)

JLAudio's patented Elevated Frame Cooling design deliverscoolairthrough slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coilofthespeaker. This not only enhances power handling, but alsosoundqualityby minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and powercompression.

Manyspeakers employ venting techniques to enhance voice coilcooling.Thisis typically accomplished by having big holes in the sidesof theframejust below the spider attachment shelf. While it providesamodestcooling benefit, this low-velocity air-flow does notblowdirectly orstrongly on the voice coil.

Ourpatenteddesignimproves upon this cooling technique in a number ofways. Byelevatingthe frame above the top-plate of the motor (viastand-offsintegratedinto the bottom of the frame) a narrow,high-velocityair-path is createdbetween the bottom surface of theframe and the topsurface of thetop-plate. This air path leadsdirectly to the voice coiland then turnsupward into the spider aircavity. By utilizing thepumping action of thespider through thisfocused air path, a largevolume of cool air hits thecoil windingsdirectly.

Anotherimportantbenefitis that the upper surface of the top-plate (one ofthe speaker'shottestparts) is directly exposed to cooling air flow,whereas on aconventionaldesign it is isolated from the air flow bythe lower flangeof the frame.The elevated frame technology greatlyincreases thermalpower handling,reduces compression effects and doesso without anyadditional parts.


FloatingConeAttachMethod - FCAM™ (U.S. Patent #6,501,844)

Thisassembly technique, conceived by JL Audio, ensurespropersurroundgeometry in the assembled speaker for better excursioncontrolanddynamic voice coil alignment.

JLAudio's patented FCAM™ technology is an innovativemethodofbondingthe surround/cone assembly to the voice coilformer/spiderassembly.This feature helps ensure concentricity of thesurround,spider andvoice coil without torquing the suspension toachieve it.This allowsfor the inevitable, slight variations inproduction partdimensionswithout having them negatively impact theintegrity of thesuspensionand coil-centering at high excursions.

Vented Reinforcement Collar

JLAudio's patented Vented Reinforcement Collar(VRC®)improvestherigidity and stability of thecone/spider/voice coiljunction anddirects airflow over the voice coilwindings for improvedthermalperformance.

The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC®) is acompositestructurethat addresses two issues related to reliability.

Byreinforcingthecritical junction between the cone, voice coil andspider, theVRCgreatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown ormaterial weakness.Itdoes this by greatly increasing adhesive contactarea andprovidingstress relief to the spider material at excursionextremes.

Subwoofer VRC

TheVRC™alsofeatures slots that facilitate air flow directlyonto thevoicecoilwindings. This reduces thermal compression effectsandenhancesreliability.

Currentversionsofthe VRC™ also incorporate lead-wire strainreliefstructures toimprove mechanical reliability.

Insert Molded Suspension / Coil / Terminal Sub-Assembly

Spiders,voice coils, terminals and lead wires are preassembled,usingapatent-pending process, onto a composite carrier forimprovedprecisionand reliability.

Aconventional speaker is assembled in layers. In otherwords,multipleparts are assembled and glued sequentially into thebasket,leading tostacking of tolerances and making it difficult toachieveoptimalassembly precision.

JLAudio'spatent-pendinginsert-molded spider carrier permanently bondsthe spiderto amechanically robust carrier that also incorporates theterminalassemblyand lead wire strain relief features for enhancedreliabilityand optimalalignment of parts. This subassembly isassembled outsidethe speakerbasket, for optimum alignment andglue-joint integrity. Thebenefit is amore precisely built, moremechanically sound loudspeaker.


Customizable Trim Ring

CustomizableTrimRing(U.S. Patent #D480,709)

Thisremovable ring can be painted to match the installationthemeanddirectly receives JL Audio grille mesh inserts (soldseparately).

ThisABS trim ring is molded in black, but that doesn't mean it hastostaythat way. By custom painting it, you can match yourinstallationthemeand create a personalized look. 

Specifically-designed grille mesh inserts are availableseparatelyandfit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

HelpfulTip: Installingthegrille mesh inserts is much easier beforemounting the woofer intotheenclosure.

Engineered Lead-Wire System

EngineeredLead-WireSystem(U.S. Patent #7,356,157) 

Carefullyengineered lead-wire design and attachments ensurecontrolled,quietlead-wire behavior under the most extreme excursiondemands.

Managingthe lead-wires on a long-excursion woofer is one ofthetrickieraspects of its mechanical design. To address this,manylong-excursionwoofers today rely on a simple solution that weavesthelead-wires intothe spider (rear suspension) of the driver.

Thebiggestproblemwith this approach is that spider limiting behaviorplays ahugelyimportant role a woofer's performance. Lead-wires thatareattached orwoven into the spider material can alter thespider's"stretching"behavior. The tinsel wire naturally has less'give' thanthe fabricmaterial of the spider leading to asymmetricalspiderbehavior andnon-uniform stress distribution around thespidercircumference. The wireattachment points can also causelocalizedpulling and tearing forces atthe spider's excursion limits.As such,longevity becomes a major concernand makes the woven-in designlessthan ideal for very long-excursiondesigns.

Whileatraditional'flying lead' design does not compromise spider linearityorradialstability, it creates its own challenges on along-excursionwoofer.Managing the 'whipping' behavior of the wire andmaking sure itdoes notcontact the cone or spider is one challenge.Another isensuring that theleads do not short one another or the frameof thewoofer.

Toovercometheseissues, JL Audio's engineered flying lead-wires workinconjunction withcarefully engineered entry and exit supportstructuresmolded into theterminals and the voice coil collar. Somemodels alsofeature jacketedlead-wires to further reduce the likelihoodofshorting and fatigue. Theresult is flawless high-excursionlead-wirebehavior, with outstandingreliability and none of thecompromisesinherent to a woven-in lead wiresystem. Building woofersthis wayrequires much more labor and partscomplexity than the simplerwoven-inapproach, but the payoff is inreduced distortion, reducedmechanicalnoise and improved reliability.
